Staying Positive Through a Pandemic

Written by Jazmín Hernández (read below for Spanish), and translated to English by: Erin Egge

Hi Everyone!

I am Jazmín Hernández from El Salvador, and currently I am in the Seattle Leadership Program in the U.S., NPH’s very own study abroad program focused on learning service leadership and English.

Spending time with my Homestay Family, the Boysens

As you all know, we are experiencing a difficult and different kind of crisis – no one saw times like this coming, but I believe it has the potential to bring out the best of us as a family and as human beings. I am living with an incredible family in Bellevue, the Boysens – they are hard working and also like to have a good time. I have been living with them for about one month and am so happy to get to know them better each day.

My time during the quarantine was difficult at first, it seemed like I had an eternity of time in front of me; but I am adjusting and keeping myself busy. I began reading the book ‘7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ with the rest of the Seattle Institute team, which has helped me, and its teachings are especially interesting to keep in mind during this situation.

During the day, I have online schoolwork and also leadership videoconferences. I spend the early part of the day being productive and doing the things that I need to do, and then in the afternoon I like to exercise and ride my bike. We have a gorgeous park near the house which is perfect for taking walks. Sometimes I go for walks with my host family here as well.

We are all busy working or studying from home, but dinner is something to look forward to! All together, we pray for this crisis and thank God that we are fortunate to be healthy, to have food, and to have a home and community at NPH.

I believe that the worst situations in life make you see what truly matters and that it is worth fighting for. Sometimes we complain for what we don’t have, but we should be thankful for what we do have. I invite everyone who has parents to reach out and talk with them during this lonely time; hug them, and tell them how much you love them. Many of us didn’t have this beautiful gift growing up, and we learned quickly that life could be very difficult, but each one of us gets to decide if this casts a shadow on our lives or makes us shine. Let these times also remind you to play with your pets, and talk with your kids, your family, your friends – these are true gifts!

Stay safe and take good care of yourself!

With love,

Jazz
